Greenmeadow
MORE THAN A HOME, IT’S A COMMUNITY
From
its start in 1954 Greenmeadow was designed to be a family community with easy
proximity to shopping, libraries and schools. Inspired by principals of modern
architecture conceived by Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe Eichler built homes featuring
spacious living areas and lots, floor-to-ceiling windows and three or more
bedrooms, which he located around a community center, pool, and park.
However,
when Joe Eichler designed the area, he could not have envisioned the spirit
that would spring to life as a result of his plans. The community center he
built at the heart of the neighborhood was a catalyst for the development of a
non-profit civic organization, called the Greenmeadow Community Association.
More than fifty years later, the Association has evolved into a tightly knit
diverse community of neighbors who work together to preserve the spirit of our
neighborhood.
Greenmeadow
is one neighborhood within the city of Palo Alto, a community within a larger
community. Greenmeadow offers a small town environment and atmosphere while
still relating to the larger city. The Greenmeadow Community Association
encourages active citizenship with all the duties and responsibilities that go
along with such rights.
The
Association welcomes newcomers to participate in a very special community and
to share our many facilities and programs. Families moving into Greenmeadow are
visited by a representative of the Welcome Committee, who provides new
residents with information about our community and extends them our traditional
warm welcome.
Families
who purchase homes in Greenmeadow receive a one-time, 50% off Full Swim
membership in the Association from the date of escrow closing through the end
of that calendar year. Memberships are renewable in January of each year.
The
Associations long-standing relationship with local government is a valuable
asset. Our Civic Affairs Committee works with the Cubberley Community Center,
the Palo Alto Unified School District, the City Council, the Planning Commission,
the Police and other city departments to address concerns of Greenmeadow
neighbors.
Community Social Events
Greenmeadow
is known for the social activities that bring us together. Our annual Fourth of July Parade is led by
Palo Alto’s mayor. Complete with our own
marching band, baton twirlers and floats, it’s an event that draws family
members of all ages. Fourth of July
volunteers organize a picnic and games that last throughout the day. Other events scheduled every year include
Halloween Parties, Spring Egg Hunts, House & Garden Tours, and Memorial Day
and Labor Day potluck dinners in the park.
Greenmeadow’s
pool is an ideal place for members to meet neighbors and relax. Children are invited to participate on the
Greenmeadow swim team. Water aerobics
classes for adults and swim lessons for children are available to members and
non-members alike on a fee-paying basis.
The
Discovery Children’s House offers programs for a fee to families with preschool
age children, and is a valued tenant and friend of the Association. An agreement has been formed with the school
that provides Greenmeadow residents priority standing on its waiting list.
Greenmeadow Park
Right
next door to the community center and pool is our own park, which is the center
for community picnics and parties. The
park, which is equipped with basketball court, picnic tables and grills, is
open to all Association members for family and neighborhood events.
